“Great Hall of Bulls”
“Great Hall of Bulls”
The cave of Lazcaux, Southern France and Northern Spain
Artist: prehistoric people
15,000-13,000 B.C.E prehistoric/paleolithic
Material: Charcoal, ocher (a kind of pigmented, earthen material, that is soft and can be mixed with liquids, and comes in a range of colors like brown, red, yellow, and white)
Content: The animals are rendered in “Twisted Perspective” in which their bodies are depicted in profile while we see the orns from a more frontal viewpoint. The images are sometimes entirely linear—line drawn to define the animal's contour. The animals are described in solid and blended colors brown by mouth onto the wall, others were carved lines into soft calcite. Studied through Ethnography is the scientific study of peoples and cultures, often based on first-hand accounts because photography would damage the art. Creating images of herds to ensure a ritualistic successful hunt. Bison. A bird headed person that many believe to be a shaman sits in the art.
