Leonardo da Vinci - “The Mona Lisa” 1503 - 1519

painting is made by Leonardo Da Vinci, the painting is oil paint on a poplar wood panel which creates a smooth blending feeling for the art. The painting is 77 cm × 53 cm (30 in × 21 in) which is relatively not as big as the paintings made during this era such as “The School of Athens”. The painting is likely depicting a wealthy merchant’s wife, which was commissioned likely as a gift or commemoration. The colors used all lean very close to a yellow ochre. Da Vinci’s color palette must have been very limited. Nevertheless the painting includes a lot of cool colors but somehow it feels very cool and detached from the viewer. The Mona Lisa wears a pleased smile on her face, historians think that Da Vinci was working on this piece until his death. The piece is truly an unfinished masterpiece. The dark colors of the hair and the cloth compared to the light on the face and her chest area creates a contrast that highlights her face and her hand. The background is a serene scenery. The painting is still one of the greatest masterpieces of all time, and looked up to by all artists after its time even til the modern era. Do you know anyone who hasn't heard of the Mona Lisa?
